I use a Logitech USB headset. On the System | Preferences | Sound dialog
box, I set all the "Sound playback" and "Sound capture" options to "USB
Audio". All sound now plays through my headset, which is good.

If I disconnect the headset, then reconnect the headset, sound is played
through my laptop speakers. This is unexpected. Sound should continue to
play through my headset. When I go the System | Preferences | Sound
dialog box, all of the options are set to "USB Audio (disconnected)". I
can change them to "USB Audio" and then sound works as expected.
