You have been subscribed to a public bug: In attempting to delete ~20 .deb files, I selected them, then I accidently pressed <enter>, instead of <delete>. This caused the system to use up almost all its resources in trying to fulfil my (accidental) commands. The cpu went to 100% usage, my 4GB of RAM was swiftly filled, the swap memory became nearly filled as well. It took a long time, but I was able to close the Software Centre instances one by one. Need a confirmation box in these sorts of cases. This would prevent the user from making a mistake like this. It had almost catastrophic consequences.
