I have a smilar problem.
I am using Hardy Heron and my graphic card is GeForce 9600M GT series.
So i am using the latest hardy-propesed package for the nvidia driver.
I am only able to set the brightness via nvidia-settings. Power Manager
Brightness Applet 2.22.1 is not dimming the backlight. Sam

Other users have encountered this bug, after bringing the BIOS to the
most recent version, and there is a work-around, but it didn't work for
me.
