I had to install kdm as gdm refused to work at all. hope this helps :-)

I have the some bug same as what Shellster said on 2007-06-01 . on two
of my machines. Find enclosed the boot and gdm log from /var/log if
you need any other please let me know.

I too have the same issue. I have also reinstall gdm with no success.
I have to load with kdm and then run gnome sessions which sucks. In my
case however, gdm just freezes and does not restart nor display login
screen. It just shows rotating cursor and a blank screen.
