You have been subscribed to a public bug: I have Ubuntu 7.04 updated. I had the same problem as thread #6130. I picked too many parameters and I got the "black screen of pause" when I booted up again. No Ubuntu Xwindows screen, just a small round clock-like icon waiting for something.
I had to set the "enable automatic login" parameter in "Windows Login Preferences" in order for the Ubuntu Xwindows session to come up again, however, I cannot get a login screen resulting in a security issue. I have to have the system automatically log me in because when I disable "automatic login" I get the black screen of pause again. This is a bug with the configuration parameters in the preferences interface. I was getting cute with the Login Window configuration. I followed the thread entitled "No Graphic Login screen to get to desktop" #6130. Very helpful. HOWEVER! I have something to add. How to fix the problem temporarily CTRL/ALT/F2 sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop startx (start a terminal session when you get in to the Xwindows session) (The Login Windows Preferences will not start unless you start gdm again) sudo /etc/init.d/gdm restart (you will get a hideous screen, ignore it, hit CTRL/ALT/F7 to get in to the Xwindows session again) (set your Windows Preferences parameters, preferably auto login by disabling automatic login) exit out and restart the computer HOPEFULLY the Ubuntu brains will find and publish a fix. This bug is a local security vulnerability. ** Affects: gdm (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: Needs Info -- Login screen missing when login reconfigured https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/116329 -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
