Hi,
in MATE, I am able to reproduce this bug just by running "ls -lR /usr"
and switching desktops back and forth.
The attached patch fixes at least this particular case.

I observed following behavior that may be related to this bug report in
fresh installation of Ubuntu 13.10.
gnome-terminal, pidgin, nautilus (and probably most of Gnome
applications) randomly freezes when I typing text in them: they became
unresponsive (not redrawing themselfs) and after few secon

Initial response from GNOME indicates the Ubuntu 3.6 version of gnome-
terminal is quite old. The current version (October 2013) is 3.10.

I confirm that this still occurs with gnome-terminal and mate-terminal
in Ubuntu 13.10. Same behaviour. Virtual terminals randomly freeze
output.
