IMHO we need to first select a protocol, then a user. Like ICQ-MrFoo. Could
the dropdown list display the protocols, and expand to the right for the users
in that protocol, like a menu?

And how are they differentiated in Pidgin? Same buddy name and same
protocol...
In the Buddy List window, placing the pointer over the entry will show a
pop-up containing the resource address. (currently using pigin 2.2.2)
also I personally use different groupings in the buddy list that happen
