Argh, sorry, this is all wrong. This is my configuration:
4 workspaces/viewports/whatever
vsize=1
hsize=4
number_of_desktops=1
Changing number_of_desktops to 4 brings back the old "Gnome-look" to the
workspace switcher. This brings the ability to move windows back to
life, but also reinstates the
4 workspaces you mean? Does changing the hsize number make it work as
you expect?

What version of Ubuntu do you use? Compiz use viewports and not
workspaces, what value do you have in gconf-editor
/apps/compiz/general/screen0/options hsize, number_of_desktops, vsize?
