Try running "empathy-accounts" and see if that works. You can also add
purple accounts through it. You need to install telepathy-haze package.

I agree that the password field in question is for the IRC server. The
real problem does seem to be in the fact that it is not possible to
enter a NickServ password through unity-control-center credentials.
I am new to contribing to Ubuntu but I would like to try and fix this
issue. I believe I

I'm assuming the password field is for a password to join the actual
server. So when you enter a password, it tries to use that password to
join the server and fails (because there is no password required to join
the actual server). So I believe the bug as reported is not really a
bug.
Would it be related to the bug #1042455?

I think this is a problem in ubuntu-system-settings-online-accounts ,
not in empathy. If anybody can confirm the bug should probably be
assigned to Ubuntu Online Accounts and not to empathy.

It still does not work in 14.04 LTS.
There is also another annoying issue where the first message does not
appear whether is on a channel or server or private message.
