What is really strange is that I just got finished installing Ubuntu on
an older k6 233Mhz system I had lying around here. Everything in the
unit is SCSI based (HD, both CDs, and ZIP). I started with the 4.10

That's interesting. So it kinda 99.99% works with SCSI then. And the
other day a friend visited me with a USB 250MB model, and it worked
perfectly, sweet as chocolate.
So ZIP drive support is not "that" broken then, rathe
