Using crossfading does eliminate the problem, actually.

This does not happen in totem, xmms, or audacious.
I do not have the "crossfading backend" enabled in Rhythmbox.

I should also mention that flac files play fine in Rhythmbox.
Is it possible Totem is using a different gstreamer plugin than
Rhythmbox?
