Since comment #5 would indicate that this is no longer an issue, I am
closing this report. If you continue to experience it in any modern
version of Ubuntu (12.04 onwards, plus 10.04 for LTS support) then
please feel free to reopen it.

This behaviour does not occur in Intrepid?

I can reproduce this behaviour in Hardy (8.04) but not in Intrepid (8.10).
Would one of the original reporters please give feedback as to whether they
still get this behaviour in Intrepid.

Never mind about the sidebar thing, it appears to occur also if it's not
in the sidebar.
