In fact it's a theme issue, if you use "GTK_THEME=Adwaita gnome-
calendar" the selected day has a dot outline so it's indicated and
"today" has an effect then

that might not be an easy theme tweak, upstream pointed to the code

so it's basically using the standard gtk selection rendering, unsure why
it doesn't do a visible result there
