Thanks for the clarification, the flickering in eog was already reported
and that's possible the cause of why the toolbar doesn't dissapear.

I think I found the cause of this problem, it's Compiz.
Steps to reproduce:
1. In menu System, select Preferences, Appearance. Select tab Visual Effects.
2. Select None. Now, open a graphics file in eog, and start a slideshow. The
toolbar is shown, but disappears after about 4 seconds.
3. Select
On one machine the toolbar is visible all the time (in slideshow). I've
checked on another machine and it does disappear there.
The weird thing is that on the first machine the screen flashes to black
a few times. Perhaps it has something to do with Compiz or another
