i am having a similar issue. i couldn't install or login through the
normal gnome session unless using failsafe session. but the same time,
kubuntu 7.10 is runing flawlessly. here is my setup:

Sebastien, There is no indication during login. With regards to the
issue in my case it seems to fail to load some gui and also graphics not
responding properly,this seems to happen the first time using the
particular prog/file, it don't seem to be constant to any program.

Sebastien, if it's not a bug and most likely to be a gdm issue how does
one fix it? It shows up on the live disk on a empty computer (no
operating system). I like majority of users expect the computer to work
after installing we are not programmers or have any knowledge of codes,
