The new poppler debs seem to to have hit the archive yet, but is it
likely that I can install the new debs on a hardy installation?
Otherwise, should I request a backport?

using the intrepid poppler version the issue seems to be fixed now

I can confirm that the same issue persists in hardy, only now the size
of the generated postscript file has grown to 5.3MB.

I allready have? rieben04a-evince.ps is the output of "print to file" in
evince. The original pdf is rieben04a.pdf that is attached in Bug
#164674
