forget my last comment, man gunzip says :
The uncompressed size is given as -1 for files not in gzip format, such as
compressed .Z files. To get the uncompressed size for such a file, you can use:
zcat file.Z | wc -c
as the .Z files in in compressed format (using compress comma
output of gunzip is the following :
gunzip -l love_C.ps.Z
compresseduncompressed ratio uncompressed_name
156649 -1 0.0% love_C.ps
I'm not sure why gunzip reports the uncompressed size as -1
