I've got a Sony Vaio SZ650N/C with the same problem. I am running the
AMD64 version of Hardy. I've done an acpi_listen and closed and reopend
the lid - there are absolutely no events listed there, nor in the
acpid.log. I've chatted with the HAL folks, thinking that the problem
might be there,

Alas, in Hardy beta it works only for first time.
When you try to close the lid again, nothing happens.
Must be something Ubuntu/Debian specific, in SLAX 6.0.3 works like
charm.
