This sounds like the issue that I am seeing on current Hardy.
If it is not then I apologise for hijacking this report.

The black bar is in fact a minaturised graph, as when the
system is busy you can see the colour change, so I imagine

Okay thanks. As I said, it's Gutsy. I only used the red star on the
top menu bar to upgrade. I did nothing else. I presume that's all
available upgrades known by the standard ubuntu mechanisms used by most
users. I did NOT do an "apt-get update;apt-get -f upgrade" or any such
