I know many/most tablets have a hardware LCD orientation of portrait
(unlike laptops which are landscape).

apport info sent while the system was showing the problem in X11.
I can also confirm that the aspect ratio is correct regardless of
orientation on Wayland

tablet is that the default screen orientation is portrait (as can be
seen in BIOS setup, grub etc.)
