For my father, it works for 3 weeks or 4, since he applied some new
ubuntu updates. He don't know which one fixed the bug.

could you attach /var/log/messages and /var/log/syslog after getting the
issue? could you also give a try to the update on bug #229866 when it'll
be available and comment on whether it makes a difference there?

I too have exactly the same problem, after I believe updates in the last
week. I was using Hardy beta fine, only when the final stable version
was released did this bug appear. I'll try to upload the files later on.
Seen people report the same problem on the Ubuntu forums.

My father finally gave me the log files. He created a new user called
tom so the .xsession should be quite clean. But he also gave me his
(francis) .xsession which he used all the time. You will find the logs
just above.

Looking through my own logs I decided to remove xserver xgl, and the problem
has gone away. Had to remove Option AIGLX OFF from xorg.conf to keep Compiz
working.
I think instaling XGL and aidding the AIGLX option to xorg.conf was a
common workaround to get compiz

First Login fails (Except fail-safe) all subsequent logins are successful

Hi,
My father has also this bug since he upgraded from 7.10 to 8.04. He must login
twice.
Process :
0. GDM asks login and password
1. First login OK
2. GDM seems to close
3. My father see fastly the console with something unreadable (too fast)
4. GDM ask again the login and password
5. Second lo
GDM restarts on first boot if you enter your login details correctly and
it DOESN'T restart if you will make an error in your password for
example - GDM will tell you that username/password is incorrect and
after filling them again you will log in successfully.
