I installed Ubuntu Hardy Heron beta a couple of days ago. The draw-
spaces plugin is still unstable: opening the slatec file with the plugin
enabled, causes gedit to freeze, and I eventually have to kill the
application (since there is no response). I still haven't checked the
issue with the Lati
I forgot to mention that the draw-spaces plugin also causes gedit to
close unexpectedly when the file encoding is not UTF-8, but it's not a
constant ---i.e., it happens with some TeX files that were created under
Windows and require Latin-1 encoding.

I don't understand what you mean by "latest Ubuntu release". Isn't 7.10
the latest release? Trying the alpha of Hardy Heron is not an option I
would want to try right now (I'll wait for the beta at least).
The offending file was slatec
