Update. This problem appears to be the System Notification applet
failing to display on the panel.
When I lost icons again today I re-added the Notification area.
(right-click, select add to panel, under utilities select the notification area
and click add.)

Dear Vojtěch Trefný ; I have tried to add the Systray (Notification List),
but it will not let me. Programs do run when they are minimized ( I have a
sound lprogram that I know is running) but I cannot retrieve it. If I am
working in open office word, and I minimize that all my work disappear
Very stupid question - are you sure you have systray (Notification Area)
and Window List on your panel? Are you sure programs disappears (they
don't run)?
