Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gdm
When X crashes, Xorg.0.log gets moved to Xorg.0.log.old. However, when the crash leaves hardware state such that the X gdm restarts is not usable, a system reset is needed to recover. This causes a new X session on the new bootup, moving Xorg.0.log over the Xorg.0.log.old of the crashed X server, hiding useful debugging details. Several things would help here. If X exits non-zero, backing up the log to a different name such as Xorg.0.log.failed would mean that non- erroring X sessions after the failure wouldn't trash the useful debugging details. Alternatively, or as well, storing several versions rather than current and old would make aid recovery (when X isn't rapidly respawning). ** Affects: gdm (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- xserver logs overwritten preventing debugging https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/192736 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug contact for gdm in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
