I don't use Ubuntu - I just follow these bug reports as a gthumb
developer.
I import all the time using Fedora 8, using Canon cameras. It works fine
there.
Sorry I can't be more helpful... perhaps you could run gthumb in gdb, if
you know how, and see what portion of the code is triggering the
It doesn't sound like a gThumb issue. It is probably a libgphoto2 issue,
or a permissions issue. gThumb is just reporting the underlying error.
I'm not sure why FSpot works OK - I'm not familiar with its import code.

Does it import all of the thumbnails? Is it possible that you are
running out of space in your tmp directories?
The Operation not supported and The folder contents could not be
displayed error messages are not part of gthumb (they aren't in the
gthumb source code).

gThumb doesn't
Personally, I'm quite sure it is a gThumb issue. gThumb shows the model
of the camera correctly, and even imports the thumbnails from the camera
correctly beneath this weird error dialog. This weird dialog appears
when there is camera and even when there is none, it's some sort of
gThumb bug.
Yes, it imports them fine, but I can't do anything with the import
dialog, because this error message takes the focus and the program hangs
when I click OK.
I have enough disk space in all the directories.

As I have said this weird dialog shows up even with no camera.
Michael, could you try on your Hardy system, if you have one?
1. Open gThumb
2. Press File - Import Photos (or equivalent in your language)

Btw, this camera was working fine with earlier versions of gThumb.
Also, it works with F-Spot import, so it is not an issue with the library
(libgphoto2 or however it is called)

The camera probably has a mass storage mode. Try using that instead of
the PTP mode.

Ah sorry, misread your comment. Yes, I can use mass storage mode, I
can import via F-Spot as well. So yes, there are workarounds, but it is
still a bug in program that was working before

No, it is PTP mode.
F-Spot also imports as from PTP
