Public bug reported:

metacity in hardy (i386) has compisting manager support can be enabled
via gconf. I've tried this on nvidia and ATI card as well (nvida and
fglrx restricted drivers). The performance render this unusable on both
machines (eg audio/video skips even with mplayer to play video niced to
level -10, XVideo seems to be jerky etc). However turning compositing
manager off has some side effects: on both machines only a small
"window" at the center of the screen can be seen from the screen and
machines locks up after CTRL-ALT-backspace (since I can't logout
otherwise). After reboot with 'sysreq magic key combo', I've discovered,
that at least on the machine with ATI card the 'fade off' effect before
activating the screensaver becomes where strange: it startes to blink
some parts of the screen, then a little delay, and then the screensaver
itself. On nvidia everything works without compositing manager however
it would be very usefull but it seems to be unusable for daily usage. If
this support is not designed to be used widely, sorry for this bug
report.
