It's fixed as far as I can see. Changed the status to 'Fix Released'.

Title:
login screen shown twice with VirtualBox Guest Additions
Tim, please update to gdm3 42.0-1ubuntu6 when it's available in a few
hours. After it's installed, restart your computer and see if you still
experience this issue.
The earlier gdm3 42.0-1ubuntu4 had some other bad side effects which
might have inadvertently made your issue not show up.

Can't reproduce the bug as of today (17 April). Suspect that it might
have been fixed with an update the last few days.

I don't use a wayland session. Also on the first login screen the xorg
session has been selected in the menu. I understand vmwgfx is the
VMware Linux graphics driver also used by Virtualbox for exposing
3D/OpenGL/3D hardware acceleration to guest virtual machines. Switching
off 3D acceleration did
BertN45: The only error that stands out to me in your log is that the
vmwgfx kernel driver keeps logging:
kernel: [drm:vmw_msg_ioctl [vmwgfx]] *ERROR* Failed to open channel.
If that's the problem then it's a bug in the kernel (where the vmwgfx
driver lives) and/or the hypervisor.

If you could provide a fresh clean log of the issue I would be
interested to see. Please:
1. Reboot.
2. Reproduce the bug.
3. Reboot.
4. Run:
journalctl -b-1 > prevboot.txt
5. Attach the resulting text file here.

My first login was with xorg and it failed, the second login was without
the menu to select wayland or xorg, So what is different between running
xorg the first time and the second time?
Some time ago I had to choose xorg, because DOSBOX and Conky did not run
with Wayland in that VM. That was

Yes if the first login fails then gdm3 assumes that means it was Wayland
that failed so on the second try it will remove the Wayland option

To manage notifications about this
To be clear in my opinion it is not a problem of Virtualbox, since I run
over 15 modern Linux distros in Virtualbox VMs and none has the same
issue. That is true for Fedora 35 and 36 Beta also with Gnome 42. No
problems with Ubuntu 20.04, Xubuntu 22.04; Ubuntu Budgie 22.04, Ubuntu
Mate 22.04,
VBoxGuestAdditions_6.1.26.iso gives the same issue.
Removing the guest additions with `sudo ./VBoxLinuxAdditions.run
uninstall` fixes the double login.
