I suspect you've just disabled hardware acceleration by doing that. It
would be a better idea to log into a Xorg session instead.

I just removed libnvidia-egl-wayland1 and totem now works fine on ubuntu

Behaves the same with the same error message for me on Wayland. Removing
".config/totem" doesn't seem to make any difference. But switching back
to Xorg does solve it for me.
