Here is a minimal debdiff that fixes the issue with the non-patched

ah, sadly that did not solve the issue. The (bad) performance stayed the
same, and much different from ephy 2.20.

Please do try and tell me when it is ready, as I still don't know if
this patch indeed fixes the problem or not. Then I'd be glad to test
anything you throw at me in a ppa :)
I tried compiling epiphany myself to no avail, so I am stuck.

This looks like a very nice patch, so I might provide a patched version
of Epiphany in my PPA.

It was suggested to me that I should try applying the patch from here

thanks but we have thousand of desktop bugs and I've other priorities to
work on, that might be an issue with loads of bookmarks but no users
complained about that yet, that seems to be an upstream bug and we have
a rather small team so it's not something we will like work on now
--
location bar
Seb, do you have lots of bookmarks by any chance? This bug will not be
apparent on a "fresh" epiphany, but it sure is visible with my 600kb+
bookmarks file.
If you are interested in a sample to try reproducing on your side,
I could attach my bookmarks.rdf, PGP-crypted for you.

Thank you for your bug report. epiphany-browser works correctly on my
hardy installations and we got no other bug about it, let's wait to see
if upstream has an idea on the issue
