Using the PDF[1] attached in bug 573377, I was able to confirm that Okular also needs poppler-data in order for Chinese characters to appear. Just to note: Bug 616321 and bug 616322 are for making the packages for Evince and Okular depend on poppler-data, respectively. [1]: https://bugs.launchpad
