I know this isn't exactly what the topic was about, but can Nautilus at
least have a feature where a folder can be opened by dragging a file
onto the folder and holding it there for a moment or two? KDE 3 already
has this feature, so I don't see any patent problems at first glance.

you should search for other patents around the topic, but as written
before that's the wrong place for a such discussion and if upstream
doesn't feel comfortable doing that due to patents they likely have a
reason

Thank you Sebastien,
I've been reading in the upstream bug and it seems that this thing has
been discussed for a while, but I don't see any clear conclusion.
First of all reading the patent 6061061 below, I don't thing that we
would be using any temporary window so this patent shouldn't apply,
did you also read the other patent mentionned? it seems to describe what
you want to implement

thanks for your interest but that's the wrong place for the issue, I'm
not a patent expert and we don't have the ressources to work on coding
such features anyway, that should be discussed and done in coordination
with the nautilus hackers

I checked both patents 6,061,061 and 5,583,984 and in both cases the
description is the same. In the abstract of both patents they always remark
about opening TEMPORARY Windows. That's not our case from my point of view. We
could just left open all our windows, so they wouldn't be temporal.

I've been looking for the patent you mentioned.
Could you pass me a link regarding this patents information?
I've found that yahoo is trying to patent some kind of smart drag and
drop but I couldn't understand what is all about.
Anyway the Gnome Taskbar already has this kind of behaviour, while

Just making that while dragging any item and waiting 1 sec over a menu
or icon the same effect as mouse click (or double click over icon) would
give us a very powerful tool.
We could do for example when sending an email:
Drag a file by clicking and holding the left mouse button.

that's a know feature request but there is some patents on the topic
which means it might not be legal to do such changes
