comment or a duplicate in this bug report and It is possible that the
bug has been fixed. May you please try to reproduce it with the latest
Stable Release of Ubuntu the Natty Narwhal and add the respective

I think that I understood your idea: the objective is know what file is.
Work with the file or open this file is a openoffice's ( koffice, abiword
etc) problem ( a big ooxml problem - ISO raped :)

I marked this as confirmed, since I too can reproduce this issue.
However, I believe this is going to be addressed in Open Office 3.0.
This should most likely be marked as a wish-list item.

Doesn't openoffice have to list the formats in its .desktop files but
shared-mime-info has to know how to recognize the file also or the file
won't be opened via eg nautilus since Gnome won't know what kind of file
it is to begin with?

Er this isn't going to be addressed in OpenOffice 3.0, the mime info is
missing from shared-mime-info, OpenOffice 2.4 can already open most of
these file types if the shared-mime-info was setup right to begin with.
Unless I am missing something?
