Having installed latest ubuntu intrepid, it appears this problem is now
resolved, so I suppose this bug could be closed? Will post here if
anything changes..

I've just been playing around on alpha 6 live cd, unfortunately,
however, I can't even test this since I havn't been able to configure
pulseaudio for surround sound without restarting (which would then
remove all settings of course) Another bug (#260675) makes installing it
impractical at the momen

I'll see if I can try some other applications, but what you suggested
there wouldn't show anything, since any 2 channel sound is merely output
to all speakers. Even if i could find a 6-channel sound to test it on,
most of these sort of applications, from poking around somewhat, will
