Leaving a window for many of the games such as mahjongg and sudoku keeps the ubuntu from entering an Idle state which prevents going to sleep or hibernating. Senario: wife plays a late night game of mahjongg once the game is over she closes the laptop lid thinking it will go to sleep, she left the empty mahjongg window open.
