its definately evolution issue! there is a problem with it and gmail. it
worked fine in gutsy for me but in hardy i also have the same problem. I
have tried all kinds of different gmail settings for evolution but non
of them work for me! i.e. changing the ports . ssl tls. it does get the
mail but

tested this with Evolution, Thunderbird and Claws and all of them have
the same issue, how this can be an Evolution problem? looks like gmail
to me rather, thanks.

no problem in Gutsy and it consistently doesn't work in Hardy.

I have the same problem with Evolution on Hardy. If I send an e-mial
with attachement, I got:
Error while performing operation.
DATA command failed: Connection timed out: mail not sent
