I've confirmed this behavior with other music players as well. For me,

Running with the same versions, I can confirm the bug. mp3, ogg, wma
all the same. Same behavior: slider doesn't move and no sound comes
out, but everything else appears to work as expected. It happens kind
of a lot for me, and stopping or restarting pulseaudio or restarting
rhythmbox has no eff
Well, darn, I seem to have fixed it and I don't know how. As I recall I
did the following...
* installed gstreamer-0.10-ugly; tested and it didn't work
* installed the whole package ubuntu-restricted-codecs; tested and it didn't
work
(and I did restart Rhythmbox between these steps, but not the
