this was fixed on http://svn.gnome.org/viewvc/evince/trunk/shell/ev-
application.c?r1=3130r2=3131 which means it's fixed since intrepid.

I just tested this with Ubuntu 8.10 with Shiretoko (Firefox 3.1b3pre)
and Evince 2.24.1, and I can't reproduce the problem any more.

I can confirm this bug is even reproduceable by launching the second
instance of Evince from GNOME Terminal.

John: I retried the bug, and I also can get it to go without the separate
workspace condition. So never mind on that part. I can confirm the bug is not
limited to firefox, as I also see it when generating pdfs with rubber called
from gedit-latex-plugin.

Stuart: it is *not* necessary for a PDF to be open in another workspace,
at least on my machine. The bug as originally described is sufficient in
my case.

I must apologise for missing some information in the original bug
report. You must be opening these PDF files from another program, not
just from Nautilus. For example, if I have two PDF files in my computer
somewhere,
1. open the first PDF using Nautilus. leave it open.
2. open firefox, navigate
I am also experiencing this bug with Hardy 8.04.1. It occurs exactly as
described in the original post for pdf files opened from both firefox
and rubber (called from the gedit-latex-plugin) so I don't think it's
specific to firefox. I do not have desktop effects enabled. Thanks!

Aha! In trying to repeat the bug I discovered a condition. It only
seems to occur if a pdf is already open in another workspace. I didn't
notice this before because I always have a pdf or two open for
reference in another workspace.
So:
Open a pdf file.
In Firefox _in another workspace_:
Click
I am not using Appearance--Visual Effects.
To be more specific, I think that I am only seeing this effect when PDF
files are opened via Firefox. It appears that Firefox is not correctly
focussing the new Evince window after it opens. Not sure if that makes
this an Evince bug or a Firefox bug or
