Yes, there are "recursive and never ending links"...
But why doesn't file-roller extract any files?
tar is doing that very well...
I just tried the same archive as a tar.gz: No error messages, but file-roller
doesn't extract any files again!

Can you tell us exactly how you created that tarball? Seems to be more a
problem on the tarball itself, do you perhaps have some circular
references in that directory?
