the log indicates an hal or linux issue, could you get an hal debug log
as described on the wiki instructions?

Just to throw another wrench into the pile, a generic MicroSD USB reader
with SanDisk 2GB MicroSD does automount just fine in the same laptop and
a desktop.

I can confirm this. Not even a mount point is created. It also applies
to cdrom and dvds in my case.
