Thanks for the prompt response, Seb. I wish I had the know-how to fix this, but
such is not the case.
I do hope someone else does and cares about this as well though.
In the mean time, I shall wait and see, crossing my fingers...

thank you for your bug report, that's an upstream wishlist, the
configuration and how is stored is an implementation detail, to send to
bugzilla.gnome.org by somebody who has interest is such cleaning, the
current ubuntu desktop team doesn't have the ressources to do such
cleaning
