clicking an event doesn't open it, unless you already had it selected.

Not specific to exchange. Looks like you have to click on the text of
the appt. title, and then right-click that same text. Then it gives the
"background" menu.
If you either click on the left end (the time), or right click there, or
both, you get the correct menu.
