It's fine in jhbuild on Hardy. Perhaps jasper's messed up in Intrepid,
or a Ubuntu/Debian patch is causing this.

thank you for your bug report, did you try building the package using
this option?
I just tried on 2.13.6 and the static build gives errors:
"gtk+2.0-2.13.6/gdk-pixbuf/io-jasper.c:262: undefined reference to
`jas_stream_write'", etc
