I looked into this a bit when Bender2k14 mentioned it on the forums.
Pausing the timer if the file is reported to be a broken link seems like the
most obvious thing to do.
Patch against the nautilus source directory is attached.

The use case I described in the forum thread is slightly different that
the one for this bug report. Mine involves a broken symbolic link
instead of a broken launcher.

I also experience this issue in Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty. I stared this
