right, there is no proper way to do transparency when a composite
manager is not used, the request is an upstream wishlist though and the
current ubuntu team doesn't have the ressources to try to workaround
that in the non composited cases

Please take a look at the screenshots, I know that those things are
there, but can't be seen in my case. The icon is only transparewnt when
using compiz.

thank you for your bug report, the icon is transparent and the directory
icon which is used as target as an opening animation when mouseovering
it which is enough clue to know that you can use it
