I believe this is one of those bugs that simply can't be fixed
currently.
Because the cdrom is mounted (almost virtually as I uderstand it). I
can't then be mounted again by the system because the device is in use.
However the setting is required by the system once installed and it

Yes, so then it should either not be shown at all or should do something
sensible like showing the cd in nautilus like it would do with any other
cd. The only thing that should not be possible is ejecting the cd while
ubuntu is running from it.

That's because it's running off of the CD! You couldn't possibly put
another CD in. invalidating.
