I went through all the session options (except remote), and I had the same problem for all of the standard ones. Failsafe GNOME logged in okay, but there were no buttons or menus anywhere on the desktop, and I'm pretty sure I did see those there when I tried running Ubuntu on a different machine.

thank you for taking your time to report this bug, can you please provide us with more information about your setup? did you install an AMD64 system or an i386 (32-bit) system? can you also please attach your X server configuration file (/etc/X11/xorg.conf) and X server log file
