Btw, I just noticed that this can be fixed by reinstalling the gnome-
control-center:
sudo apt-get install --reinstall gnome-control-center
Then the radio button is back!

I guess you're right. If I do
gksudo gnome-appearance-properties
and run the appearance manager as root, then the radio button is
checked. But I have no idea which user setting it is that prevents the
radio button from being checked.

Yep, the problem is fixed if I boot with the most recent 8.10 Ubuntu
live CD. But it's still there on my current install (which is 8.10
downloaded middle of October and then updated regularly).

Yes, I still have that problem. I installed from an intrepid beta
version and then kept updating. But the bug persists.
I also have an intrepid final release live CD. I will test that later
and post the result here.

Another EDIT: to your last question, the desktop effects are used. It's
just that the radio button does not check permanently. If you don't have
the same problem, maybe you must install from the current intrepid live
CD. I also install from the latest live CD about 5 days ago and have the
same prob
I have the same problem and Ricardo described it pretty accurately. Just
go to "Apperance" "Visual Effects Tab" and no Radio button will be
checked even if you checked one before.
