I am using the default Human theme. I have always had problems such as
this one when using the default theme, but had previously just 'put up
with it', waiting in hope for a fix to come along via the update
manager. I tried other themes, and the icon is the correct size in
them. Attached is how
could select the line to show if the icon goes out of the orange color,
that's not the case on my installation

This is probably a theme bug. I don't see that here with my icon theme,
and we clearly set the icon size to GTK_ICON_SIZE_MENU in the places
sidebar (which should be, under normal circumstances, 16x16).
