Unfortunately my hard drive has crashed last week. Now I'm running a new
installation of Intrepid. Evolution is working fine. The problem could not
be reproduced.

In Classic View, do you have the horizontal marker (the three grey lines
in the black circle) at the top?

No I didn't have a crash.
Here is what I have:
View
- Current View - Messages (checked)
- Layout - Everything checked
- Preview - Show Message Preview (checked)
- Classic View (checked)
I'm able to see all panes including Message List if switch to Vertical

did you have a crash and selected the option to not reload automatically
the messages after restarting? could you look in the view menu what
options are selected?

Yes. The problem is still there this morning.
I don't know how you could reproduce it. It just happened to me yesterday
and I did not do anything crazy.
