I updated to 9.04 today. No problem at all!! I don't understand the
internals of the problem, so I can't state unequivocally that the
problem is fixed, but it's got to be good sign. Thanks to every body
who has worked on this.

could you run ldd /usr/lib/libgconf2-4/2/libgconfbackend-xml.so and add
the log to the bug? usually such errors are due to local libraries
version installed not using the packaging system and being used before
the ubuntu version
